Imagine you are finally back from work in the evening or it’s a summer weekend. You step onto your deck or patio, enveloped by lush trees, vibrant shrubs, and the sweet scent of flowers. The air is filled with the sounds of birds. You may hear soft tinkling of the wind chimes, or gentle trickling of your water feature. Within just a few minutes, I guarantee, you’ll feel a lift in your spirits. And after about 30 minutes, you might find yourself completely recharged. That’s the power of nature.
While there are exceptional landscape architects out there, many offer cookie-cutter advice, resulting in some landscaping looking boring and lacking personality.
Here are some creative ideas for you, gardening enthusiasts, for creating beautiful, engaging and nurturing outdoor spaces and Feng Shui garden.
We’re equipped with five main senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. In the garden, we can indulge four other senses besides just visual.
Hearing
We can delight in the natural chirping of birds or the gentle hum of bees, if we plant the right flowers. If you like birds, consider adding one or two bird feeders. You may also enjoy the sounds of trickling water from your water feature or melodious sound of wind chimes. Introducing harmonious sounds can counter nearby traffic noise, evoking feelings of serenity and joy. Different people like different sounds. Incorporate sounds that evoke feelings of wellbeing and happiness in you.
Touch
There are many ways to indulge our sense of touch. People love to touch plants, flowers, smooth pebbles, and soft outdoor cushions. It feels amazing to walk barefoot on a warm stone patio or silky grass. Research even suggests that going barefoot can discharge static electricity that we all inevitably collect on us. This helps to alleviate stress. In the summer, I try every day to walk barefoot around the property. When we connect with the earth with our bare feet, we absorb free electrons which contribute to our health and well-being. Besides, it just feels so good!
Smell
The sense of smell holds great importance. Natural fragrances are often underrated. While we tend to rely on artificially scented products in our homes, nature offers the most exquisite aromas. Unfortunately, many landscapers overlook the opportunity to incorporate fragrant flowers and shrubs. Yet, these scents can bring immense happiness and joy. I always try to plant something that I love to smell all season long. In the spring it is lilacs, lilies of the valley. Later in the summer it is peonies, roses, honeysuckles, lilies, and many others. I planted honeysuckles by the porch, so I sit and enjoy the aroma and hummingbirds coming by.
Taste
You can even engage your sense of taste if you plant some fruit trees or vegetable gardens or at least an herb garden. Nothing tastes better to me than my own home-grown tomatoes, basil, or cucumbers. We enjoy our own grown veggies and herbs all summer long. Our peaches and raspberries taste quite heavenly.
Sight
What we see in our gardens and outdoor spaces can not only please the eye but rejuvenate our soul. Personalize your garden with things that are meaningful to you and bring joy. Delight yourself in creating an enchanting Meditation Garden or a Fairy Garden.
Adding garden lights adds something magical in the evenings.
There are a variety of the lights that operate from a solar battery. There are many wonderful garden lights ideas on Amazon and Etsy this season.
I found this wicker lamp and Moroccan lantern to be particularly irresistible.
A firepit not only adds a visual appeal but also fosters a sense of gathering, intimacy and a deeper sense of relaxation.
And of course, a water feature delights both the eyes and ears.
Hope this inspires your creativity and brings joy.
Happy Gardening!
