Many people overlook bedroom lighting, but it can really add beauty and function to your room’s design.

The Science Behind Light

Research has consistently shown that light, especially natural light, plays a crucial role in regulating our hormones and circadian rhythms. The right type of bedroom lighting can have profound effects on our sleep quality, health, productivity, and overall happiness.

Warmer, softer bedroom lighting—think hues of orange and yellow—in the evening can boost melatonin production, often referred to as the sleep hormone. In contrast, bright, cold white and blue lights during nighttime might impede melatonin production and instead prompt serotonin production. Ideally, we need serotonin during the day and melatonin at night for a balanced sleep-wake cycle.

Types of Bedroom Lighting

Task Lighting: This is the primary component of bedroom lighting. For many, a simple lamp on a nightstand or wall sconces can suffice. If you like to read in bed, consider wall-mounted fixtures with adjustable arms to direct the light onto your book. I like these simple lamps from Amazon https://amzn.to/444G03q

The low-hanging pendants are becoming increasingly popular. If you are ready for a contemporary bedroom upgrade, wicker and rattan pendants are especially popular. I love them! They represent the use of natural materials and sustainable design. They add warmth and texture to your bedroom. Etsy is offering many artistic, unique hand-made designs. https://creatoriq.cc/3QE6IfV

Ambient Lighting: Do we really need ambient lighting in the bedroom? While not strictly essential, ambient lighting can add an aesthetic layer to your bedroom décor. A chandelier can be a decorative feature, but always prioritize the lighting near your bed. When picking out designs, go for rounded, harmonious ones. Avoid sharp features and edges in a chandelier. It will create a sense of agitation, as it will be seen from the bed.  https://creatoriq.cc/3DWU0l1

Avoiding Certain Types: Remember, not all lighting is suitable for the bedroom. Ceiling fans often combined with lights might seem like a two-for-one deal, but they are sharp, bulky, and often feel oppressive seen from the bed, especially if your home has low ceilings. Recessed lighting, while great in other parts of the home, may be too harsh for bedrooms. And always be wary of excessive brightness or lighting that’s too stimulating, especially before bedtime.

Choosing the Right Light Color

Throughout most of human history, our evenings have been lit by the yellow-orange glow of burning wood or candles. Bright white lighting in the evenings is a very recent thing and our biology isn’t acclimated to it yet. Especially for the bedroom lighting you want to aim to be closer to 2,000 Kelvin which is an equivalent of the yellow-orange color of the burning wood or candlelight.

For the right ambiance and mood, it’s great to have your bedroom lighting on a dimmer. https://amzn.to/3QCOT0W
